Today began with Mr. Al's lecture regarding what to do when you're having a WTF (What's the Future) moment. Mr. Al defined this as a situation that arises that causes you to question your future goals. I loved being reminded by Mr. Al that we are all part of his family and that he, as well as all of MedEx, will have my back throughout my journey.
Later, we watched a movie called "Miss Evers' Boys." This was an excruciating movie to watch. The movie discusses the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment from the point of view of Eunice, the nurse in the study. I felt for Eunice, as she wanted to care for her patients and love them the best that she knew how, while also realizing that she could not give the men treatment. The whole Experiment is an interesting study, as it gives insight into what the US was thinking at the time, about the differences in race. The fact that the African American providers had to choose between giving their patients treatment and continuing a study to try to prove that blacks and whites are equal astounds me and floors me. Watching a movie like this makes me want to scream, as I feel for the men in study who are not receiving communication from their healthcare providers. These men put their trust in the doctors/ nurses to love them and provide for them, which they did, but they also had other things to contend with. I hope that by learning about an experiment like this, I can help prevent this from ever occurring again.
To conclude the day, the M2 students gave us another Integrated Practice of Medicine (IPM) Lecture and showed us more clinical skills. This focused on the abdomen, except for our case study which was about diabetes. We went into depth on Type I vs Type II diabetes, since this is a diagnosis that every single physician will see very regularly. Lastly, we practiced performing an abdominal exam on each other.
I will not be at MedEx on Monday due to a pre-coordinated absence/ will miss my shadowing day (Day 20 of the program).
