To start the day MedEx Tier I had a lecture regarding all the different specialties of therapy. I learned that therapists work in large teams of therapists ranging from speech therapists to occupational therapists to neuro therapists. Afterwards we toured the Roger C. Peace Therapy Clinic inside of Greenville Memorial Hospital. We were able to witness all that we had just learned about in the lecture. I was able to see physical therapists in action working alongside occupational therapists. Also, I witnessed how patients undergoing neuro therapy were treated with more care because of the brain's sensitivity. It was also fascinating to see a therapeutic dog at work. The dog, Lonnie, was amazing at calming patients - truly exhilarating to see how animals can calm humans down. I really enjoyed learning about therapy/ seeing how that works even though I do not want to be a therapist. Next, one of the program advisors, Hannah, taught our group about the Alexander Technique. The Alexander Technique is a way to destress your body by getting in more ergonomically correct postures while sitting and relaxing. Then we were assigned a new research project. The design of this project is to investigate one of my fellow students in MedEx; the purpose is to see how colleges can learn so much about a person by what they post on their account(s). Quite fascinating! Next, a lab technician came to speak to us about careers in the lab. One of the activities we did was to run an actual strep test from start to finish (with pre-swabbed testers)... this is the picture above. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how the lab functions to provide the doctors with accurate results, so they can properly diagnose a patient. Finally to end the day, a panel of last year's Tier I graduates came back in order to offer advice to us about applying to colleges. Most of their advice centered around looking for scholarships and financial aid. My favorite part of the day was learning the Alexander Technique because now I can relax more effortlessly.
