Today was the first day of the last week of MedEx (this post also constitutes Day 2, as I did not have a clinical on that day). To begin the day, we had a time of reflection on all of our clinical experiences throughout our internship. I loved being able to hear about everyone's experiences: the good, the bad, and the ugly. One person shared about their experience of having to go into a family's room with the physician and tell the parents that their son of 2 days old had passed away and another shared about seeing nurses treated improperly. Thankfully, it was not all bad and many shared experiences with physicians and other healthcare professionals who did their best to ensure that everyone they treated felt cared for. My experiences certainly lined up with the latter category.
After this, MedEx Tier III had a talk from the epidemiologist who headed up Clemson's response to Covid-19. I loved hearing his presentation and seeing how in the real-world medicine involves dealing with government and arbitrary rules/ regulations that are put into place. He talked about how Clemson did the best they could in funding his operation for Covid-19 testing; however, there were some things that were not able to be achieved at every instituion, especially at USC (not requiring everyone to get tested every week b/c of fund shortages).
Next, Tier III presented our Stalker presentations. These were presentations that we created about another member of MedEx.... we tried to find out as much about them from their social media presence online and shared that with the group. Afterwards, Mr. Al came and talked about "Mapping our future". To conclude our day, we did an implicit bias test where 15 physicians were shown on the screen who were on the AAMC's best/ worst physician lists. We had to put them on one of the two lists based on only their picture. In this we were able to see how we might make judgements more on appearances than we believe.
