To start today, Tier III had our penultimate Kaplan course, which I greatly enjoyed. Afterwards, Tier III had the opportunity to present our interdisciplinary board presentations to Dr. Linton from the USCSOMG and to our tier-mates (as shown in the picture above). My group's presentation centered around the Pediatric Hematological perspective of the case study of a 15-year-old male who had previously been diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia SS and who was presenting into the ED with a variety of symptoms. More specifically, our presentation discussed the role of some of the medications that the patient was taking, what is sickle cell disease, what complications it can cause, the demographics of the disease, and the specific recommendations for immunizations for these patients. I discussed sickle cell disease in general terms including its method of inheritance, how it is a single amino acid point mutation, and what the results of the disease can cause/ be. Throughout this process of developing and presenting these presentations, I had the wonderful opportunity to improve my teamwork skills and my leadership skills as I did my best to divide the work evenly between our team members and to ensure everyone was doing a role that best suited their strengths. I also improved my oral communication skills as we developed our outline/ plan of action for our presentation and practiced presenting with my team.

After this presentation, a CRNA, Mr. Wilson, came and spoke to our tier about his job. I greatly enjoyed hearing about his job/ role in the OR and comparing what he said to what I have actually seen in the Operating Room (it lined up well). CRNAs manage a patient's anesthesia care in combination with Anesthesiologists. This is a great representation of the teamwork model observed in healthcare.
