During MedEx today, we first toured the Clemson nursing school. Even though I am a lifelong Gamecock fan and currently a student at USC, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all that Clemson has done with its Greenville nursing program. Clemson has developed a very high-tech sim lab with many high-fidelity mannequins that can give birth, bleed out, talk, etc. This is a great way to ensure that the nurses-to-be will have experiences and practice with "patients" before they go out and do their clinical rotations. I also think that it is really amazing to see that the UofSCSOMG and the Clemson Nursing School are physically linked as buildings. Another reminder that healthcare is a team sport/ a reminder of the core competency for physicians of teamwork.
Later on in the day all the Tier III MedExers got re-certified or certified for the first time in BLS (basic life support). It was a wonderful experience to practice giving CPR to a mannequin including, high quality chest compressions and breathing. We also learned about the Heimlich maneuver. As seen in the photo above, I worked with a team of other MedExers who all wish to be future healthcare professionals. I loved their constructive criticism on my technique and the ability to practice working as a team to save the life of the mannequin. In this activity, I was able to continue to develop my reliability and dependability skills.
Lastly, to conclude the day, Tier III had a chance to study for their graduate test (GRE, DAT, MCAT, etc.) I enjoyed the three-hour block dedicated to studying for the MCAT (for me). I was able to accomplish a great deal, including watching several videos about chemistry and physics topics, and take several quizzes/ tests of my knowledge and abilities. Overall, today was a wonderful day, as I was able to enhance my critical thinking, my reliability and dependability, and my teamwork skills.
