Today was my first day of MedEx Tier I. It was a very exciting day! To start the day, we played some get to know you games; these included two truths and a lie in groups, "speed dating" by asking our partner a question and then rotating partners, and lastly, a game where we attempted to make connections/ form a web with yarn by describing ourselves out loud and having people say "me too" if they had a commonality. After lunch, Mr. Casey Wiley led us on a tour of the USCSOMG. We got to see the cutting edge simulation lab, 14 exam rooms (where simulation patients can test the medical students' skills), and much else of the school. After the tour, Ms. Robyn Zimmerman presented on the importance of having our own "brand." She encouraged us to look for our what (our skills) and our why in everything that we do. Ms. Zimmerman stressed the importance of gravitas (especially empathy), communication, and appearance for any profession but especially healthcare. Next we went over how MedEx has philanthropists who help to make the experience possible; later Mr. Al Squire spoke on how MedEx will be a relationship/ family and not just an experience. Dr. Thames also welcomed us to the program, and she discussed how GHS is changing its role in healthcare and education. My favorite part of the day was learning about my group of five's research topic for the week: "The Opioid Crisis: What is it? How did it start? What situations might help us to solve it?" I, along with my group, will develop a presentation tackling this tough question and present to Tier I of MedEx on Friday. I'm excited for the weeks ahead!
